Reaching Your Target Audience
As an API product owner, I didn’t have a front-end for demos. So, I showed new features through raw JSON in Postman. My business partners were often (understandably) confused.
This made me realize I was successfully translating their needs into developer requirements, but I was failing at presenting the end result.
My solution? I used Retool to build a lightweight front-end for our API demos.
Suddenly, the data had context. Demo responses shifted from “what would this look like in the app?” to “oh - that makes sense now.”
Now, my demos focus on client experience, not the implementation details.
If you’re a product owner (especially for APIs or internal tools), remember that while it’s natural to be proud of your team and over-share, it’s not just about showcasing what you’ve built. The key is to effectively communicate value.
